Funky and Fun Recycled Dining Room Chairs

Michelle Nussbaumer on One Kings Lane

Who ever said that dining rooms and dining room chairs had to be boring? If you have a streak of fun and boho chick in your decorating repertoire then try this fun and easy idea, recycle, paint and recover with bright colors instead!

It doesn’t matter how dated or weird your dining room chairs are, you can always revive them. You can visit second stores and find newer chairs that just need some tender, love and care. Take it up a notch in the funky department by finding different designed chairs that are all relatively in the same size group.

Once you have chosen the chairs you want to makeover choose a paint color that is neutral and within in your color palette; consider blacks, greys, beiges and deep blues. Or if you are daring, try a bold punch of color like yellow or turquoise. Depending on their shape and their material you may need to sand down the chairs before painting. Paint the chairs your desired color and start picking out fabrics.

A fine set of six, early 19th century, painted Gustavian dining chairs, retaining the original paint, and been recently reupholstered by us in a
vintage linen hand dyed in pink, with a double piping contrast vintage linen, again hand dyed in yellow.

This elegant and colourful set of dining chairs will make a statement in most settings.

This is where you can go wild. If you have 4-6 chairs, find two different fabrics to use. Or if you have 8 dining room chairs, try three different fabrics. Or if you are feeling very creative you can have a different fabric for each chair. The decision is up to you and how uniformed you want your room to be. Look for bold patterns, bright colors and interesting textures and recover.

Your dining room typically becomes the least used room in your home until the holiday dinners are parties. Make it the go-to room for any occasion by creating a fun and inviting room with funky and exciting dining room chairs! This one will sit just fine with everyone.
